Six Ways to Make Your Kids Eat Healthy

Getting kids to eat anything that isn’t a starchy snack or a bottle of sugar is a real chore. They always want the sweetest, quickest thing, don’t they? But here are five things to keep in mind when trying to get them to eat something that little bit healthier, and it won’t do you any

Teaching your kids that cartoons are not reality

GUN SAFETYChildren’s Cartoons are getting more and more violent which each new show. Take the old cartoons and compare them to the new style cartoons. The older cartoons were about goofy animals like bugs bunny and Elmer Fudd. But now they are about kids carrying weapons around and hitting people and things like in Ed, Edd, and Eddie. There are so many cartoons these days that need to be checked for content and violence. When young children see violence they think its ok to act in such a manner but they don’t realize that cartoons are not reality and that they can actually hurt someone if they were to follow the cartoons example.

That is why every parent needs to go to a weapon safe sale to ensure that they are safely storing there weapons from their children. Many children are taught from an early age how to fire a gun, especially if they go hunting with their dads. But not all kids understand gun safety, so teaching them the proper way to handle a gun and securing the guns in a safe they don’t have access to would be the best way to insure your children do not shoot themselves or others thinking it’s a game.

With all the violence on television and all the news broadcasts about children getting ahold of guns in a home when they were unsupervised wouldn’t you feel safer with a weapon safe for your weapons? Every home that has a gun or weapons should have them secured in a safe. Yes this makes it harder for you to get to if a criminal breaks in but would you rather that be hard or it be hard to bury your child or your child’s friend from being shoot or killed from a weapon that you was supposed to have safe form kids.

Parents are now being charged with the crimes their children under certain ages commit simply because they did not have their weapons in a safe that wasn’t accessible to the children. Keeping your guns and weapons in your bedroom under your bed is simply not safe enough. You must use a safe. That way they won’t try all the cool things they see on television and video games thinking it’s just a game. In reality weapons hurt and can kill and children younger than 12 or disabled children don’t understand the consequences of using a weapon since they see the actions on television and in cartoons and movies all the time. So to protect your home and your children and the children that come into your home make sure your guns and weapons are in a secure safe away from prying hands and eyes. It’s ok to teach them how to hunt but you must also teach them that these are adult items that cannot be touched without an adult present to monitor your actions.

Let’s keep all kids safe and turn off those violent cartoons that depict weapons as a fun toy and talk to our kids more about appropriate ways to use weapons and when to use a weapon so that we as a society don’t have to face anymore children’s deaths due to negligence of gun and weapon safety.

Disabilities on television and what they teach our kids

KIDS AND TELEVISIONMany children suffer from diabetes and other mental health related issues. There are some new age television shows that are produced to show kids that others with disabilities such as diabetes and ADHD are not any different that they are. So with these shows comes an understanding of the differences in all of us. These are shows that should be supported by the community and offered on more channels than the outrageous cartoons with violence that they are currently showing on television. Some of these shows would be

  • Sesame Street, where they have children with all different life stories interact with everyone, Sesame street has been featuring children and adults with disabilities since they started the show.
  • Life goes on, This show featured Corky who had down syndrome in the 80’s, this was one of the first shows to feature a down syndrome teen
  • Glee, which features Artie in a wheelchair and Becky who has down syndrome, is one of the most popular television shows for breaking through barriers of discrimination
  • Switched at Birth, who features Emmett who is born deaf and Daphne who has Meniere’s disease which renders her deaf on some days and hearing on others. In this show they use sign language to communicate with each other.
  • Parenthood, features a family dealing with Autism, they get the diagnosis and learn how to cope with the changes in their life and how to help their child develop
  • Teen Mom 2, features a little girl who has braces and glasses and many difficulties in life, she was born premature and has since made strides to keep up with her identical twin
  • The secret life of an American teenager, features a teen boy with down syndrome, who is actually more level headed than the rest of the teens on the show
  • Breaking bad, which features a teen with mild Cerebral Palsy

Now not all these shows are geared towards only kids but they are geared towards getting awareness out about the many diverse people in the world. Diversity amongst children and adults in television should be supported and broadcasted to teach kindness, acceptance, and show the children that will be our leaders one day how to treat everyone, including the ones they don’t understand with respect.

One thing that these shows should focus on is insurance policies for children and adults with these issues. Many parents are not aware that they can get quotations for diabetics, but need to be educated for their own benefit. Many insurance companies don’t insure children and adults with disabilities but there are some who do and without advertising on television shows then they won’t know about it. There are also options for UK plans that need to be addressed for disabilities that most companies won’t insurer, so check out the features and learn all you can to help your child or spouse out. With proper medical care you are insurable and these policies need more screen time to advertise to the ones that really need these policies. By providing information during the commercial breaks for these shows listed above they can features the disability and then feature the insurance policy that will help the families obtain peace of mind.

Take them outside and play!!

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIESMany kids these days are addicted to the television. The increase in obesity has shown that we need to get our kids out into the yard and start running and playing with them. The best way to do that is limit their television time and get them involved in a sport or activity that is geared towards exercise and outside time. Trying many different things till you find the right one your child is interested in will take some time but once you find that outside activity they enjoy you will be so much happier.

Taking your kids outdoors and playing basketball can be fun for all. But one thing you will need is a basketball pad for the basket to stand on. This can be easily accomplished by contacting www.paving-capetown.co.za they can help you to determine what size pad you will need and where it is best to put it.

Other things that can be added to your yard for your child’s outside enjoyment could be a block patio. The difference in riding your bike on your block patio and asphalt driveways are different. Asphalt driveways lead to the road where block patios can be in the back yard and be safer to keep the kids away from traffic. So building a block patio for bike riding for your little one in your backyard is a better alternative than letting them ride on the driveway or on the road.

Playing tag is a very rewarding exercise for children. Not only are they getting exercise from running from each other or you but they are learning to share the position of who is it. This builds relationships and teaches them fine motor skills. Tag is an all-time favorite outside game for most kids. Although some kids may be more sensitive and not like being tagged it. So make sure that whoever is playing with your kids is not going to get upset if they are tagged it.

Baseball is another sport activity that you can play with your children. Taking them to the front yard and throwing the ball for them to hit and run imaginary basis teaches them sportsmanship and to play on a team. Get all the neighborhood kids together and throw some balls for hitting practice. Praise the ones that try and fail and praise the ones that try and make a run.

Kick ball is another great activity to do outside with your kids. All you need is a kick ball and a bunch of friends and a few items to represent base. You put someone on every base and then the rest line up and kick the ball as hard as they want to get to base. The best part about kick ball is running the bases while others are chasing the runaway ball. This is one activity that everyone loves.

So now you have a few ideas of activities to get your kids out of the house, off the television, and into a sport or game with friends. Now go outside and play.

5 Musical instruments to entertain your kids. From flutes to guitars!

MUSIC FOR KIDSMusic is all over television and kids love to hear it, dance to it, and even play it. Helping your child have a well-rounded personality includes teaching them about music and what better way than to buy them a musical instrument. Knowing what to buy for your particular child can be daunting but here is a few helpful suggestions that could help you decide what is right for your child.

Guitar

The acoustic and electric guitar is a longtime favorite of many boys and girls. It produces an enchanting sound that draws in the crowd. Many young boys start out with an acoustic guitar and end up in famous bands. Guitars for little ones can be pretty reasonable but the older they get the bigger the price tag on the guitar gets. The cheapest guitar would be the acoustic since it doesn’t require an amplifier like the electric does.

Drums

Drums are very popular among boys who love to make some noise. They are loud and can be very therapeutic when upset since you bang on them with drumsticks, it relieves aggression. A typical drum set can be quiet expensive but you can start out with a “My first drum set” which can be bought at most department stores or toys stores.

MIDI keyboard

When considering a keyboard do some research and consider a MIDI keyboard. They have infinitely more sound options than a standard keyboard. MIDI keyboards will help that little musical genius learn to compose music for a future as a music producer. Some of them come as basic MIDI keyboards and some of them come with extras that make the keyboard even more special, but each thing comes with a price and MIDI keyboards are not cheap.

Recorder

A recorder is similar to a flute, it is a reed instrument that many elementary schools are adding as a requirement to their music program. Students are assigned a recorder to learn a few simple songs to perform in front of the school. This helps teach them about music and performing in front of a crowd. Music classes are working more and more to teach students about all types of music and musical instruments and the recorder is one of the cheapest instruments to purchase. They can be found at any local music shop for under $10.00.

Triangle

A triangle produces a vibration based on the angle and the strength that you tap them with the bar. These are simple instruments for children to start out with for band in school or music class. They are designed to make different vibration sounds to add to any musical compilation. Triangles can be purchased at any music store and generally are pretty affordable. If your child is interested in music but unsure of what instrument to play or unsure of the spot light of an instrument that could have a solo a triangle is the best option. They have very few keys to learn and are not too hard to master.

Knowing what instrument to get your child should be something you discuss with them if they are old enough to have input into the conversation. Some children will be more comfortable with the triangle than the tuba or saxophone. So sit down and talk with them and make an informed decision before purchasing that expensive instrument they may never touch.

Six Ways to Make Your Kids Eat Healthy

HEALTH TIPSGetting kids to eat anything that isn’t a starchy snack or a bottle of sugar is a real chore. They always want the sweetest, quickest thing, don’t they? But here are five things to keep in mind when trying to get them to eat something that little bit healthier, and it won’t do you any harm either.

-        Get Fibre

The reason why raw sugar is so bad for you and your kids is that your body ingests it immediately. That’s why fruit, while quite sugary, is much better for you than drinking fruit-flavoured soda. It’s the fibre inside the fruit that helps your body. Try switching your kids’ snacking habits to fruit to see an immediate difference.

-        Free Yourself of Sugar Free

A lot of what’s labelled as sugar-free actually isn’t at all. They use sugar substitutes like High-Fructose Corn Syrup. Try something healthy like natural yogurt. Add in some nuts or granola to give it that extra oomph. You can get your kids involved by making your own jams to add in. See what flavours they want to try!

-        Add Peppers

Peppers are a great addition to any meal and also make up a vital part of a healthy diet. A lot of kids are picky eaters, their taste buds are super-charged so they experience taste differently to adults. Start them off on green or yellow peppers, the milder ones, or if your kid has a taste for spice then go all out with reds and chilies.

-        Drink Teas

You might not think it, but teas play an important function in a healthy lifestyle. Black tea is ok, but a lot of people douse it up in milk and sugar. This completely defeats the purpose. Try your kid on herbal teas, peppermint teas, chamomile and green especially. Get them used to the idea that there is a range of teas out there for them and that it’s ok to choose something a little difference. It’ll stand to them in later years.

-        Avoid Trans-Fats

These are often found in baked goods, cookies, cakes, anything with partially-hydrogenated oils, which are not the best foods for flat abs. These fats will give your kids a big belly, and even though you don’t have to raise an athlete, you also don’t want your kid to have more weight than just the baby fat. On top of all this, if you join in with these kinds of eating habits, you’ll quickly pick up a pair of abs for yourself. You’ll lose that stomach fat and promote a good internal system for moving your nutrients around.

-        Involve them

Often, children don’t understand the link between the ground and their own plate. Why not take them to a farm to plant some seeds? Grow some potatoes in your back garden, watch a kid’s cooking show with them and ask them if they want to help you in the kitchen. Little things like this make kids want to eat, because they see the connection and they feel like they played a part in the process.

Throwing an educational birthday party

SONY DSCWhen your child’s birthday comes around you want to throw a party that everyone will enjoy. So why not throw an educational party that incorporates education and fun in a fun inventive way? Here are some ideas for how to make your child’s birthday fun and educational.

A trip to the museum can be fun and educational at the same time. Some cities offer children’s museum’s that are geared towards interacting with the exhibits and educational activities. The museum can offer many different learning experiences for your children and this is something that would give them new knowledge while having fun, making them more interested in cultural and educational places in the future.

Treasure hunt birthday party can be fun and educational as well. You can cook out with the best electric smoker under 300 dollars, and provide clues and treasures for the kids to find while the adults cook and hang out. This makes it creative and fun while teaching them reasoning, poetry, nature, and adventure. Treasure hunts can involve themes such as Jake and the never land pirates, Dora the Explorer and many other educational TV shows. This will provide the children with activity and help them to learn new and important aspects about using their minds to evaluate and find objects not hidden in plane site. You can use such items as certain plants, birds, trees, and many other educational and nature items.

You can also have an animal themed party and invite an animal farm to your house to teach the kids about the different animals and what they eat and how they are taken care of. Many animal farms will have goats, rabbits, chickens, horses, sheep, some even have exotic animals like monkeys, tigers, and lions. Some animal farms you may have to take the kids to for them to experience the animals. One such place is Butts Mill Farms in Georgia. They have horseback riding, tigers on exhibit and many other educational information for children. Places like this will have group and party rates and can even provide food or access to make food for the party.

When planning an educational party for your child’s birthday it’s always best to do something around what your child is interested in. This will help them be more interested in what they are learning and keep their attention during the event. Not every child is comfortable with animals or may even have allergies to certain things in the environment so speaking with the parents about your plans will help to determine which child will be comfortable participating in the day’s events. Children are like sponges and soak up information at an alarming rate. The first ten years of their life is the best time to educate them on the world and nature so that they will love learning. One way to do that is to always make their birthday parties an educational event. Teaching your children is one of the best gifts you could ever give to them. The more they know and the more fun they have learning will keep them fueled for learning for a lifetime.

Take them back before the days of video games. When all there was to play was “Outside”

There’s no doubt about it. Kids love their video games. There’s something better out there, and it’s free. It’s a long loved game simply called “outside”. We had to play it when we were young, and it’s time to bring it back into fashion. Playing outside beats any video game on any given day because it can be whatever it is your child wants it to be. Taking it from a simple game of tag or maybe a bike ride around the block with your child on a kids scooter right there next to you, it’s a big open world that outside is. Take time to enjoy it with your child. It’s the best education during the summer. Trees to climb, bugs to find, and you can even make mowing your lawn a game too maybe. That would be something else, probably asking too much there. However, playing outside is the world’s first game. I’m sure they’ll love it and especially if they played that game with their number one fan and that’s you. At least pull up a chair and read while they run around outside with their pet, or neighborhood friends playing hide and seek.

OUTSIDE PLAY

They can use their imagination outside too. They can invent a real life “video” game where they climb up trees and jump over boxes that are lain out for them to play with. A refrigerator box because a pirate ship or a space shuttle. Catching lightning bugs in the evening was a magical event. Granted the magic only lasted a short while, but it still was an event to make the evening fun.

Instead of unplugging your PlayStation or Xbox from the TV, try unplugging your child from the PlayStation or Xbox and going outside instead. Enjoy nature’s video game. Even take it to the limit and a memory you can share with your child is the day where maybe you both got caught in the rain and made jumping into rain puddles an event and just simply played in the rain. Those puddles you could pretend were the ‘Puddles of Destiny” and see who made the biggest splash jumping into them. It’s not just outside time for them, it is for you too. They can play with their friends, they can even play with you.

Last I checked “Outside” was a game that only ended when it was time to come in and get ready for bed. It’s a game that’s so much fun that it yields a few comments from your children such as “Just five more minutes, please!”, or “I’ll be there in just a minute!” (which usually turned into 15 minutes or a half an hour)

So I say it’s time you introduce your child to the great game of “Outside”. It’s a year round game with different activities and games to play depending on the season. From swimming and running through hoses, to sliding down the hill covered in snow in your backyard on a piece of cardboard or even a cookie sheet if you don’t have a sled. It’s time to introduce your child to the best game ever. It’s called, “Outside.”

3 Fun Summer Activities for Kids

SUMMER ACTIVITIES

When summer comes parents get anxiety over how to keep them entertained. Many kids are busy bodies and need to be doing something every second of their lives and some are content to sit and read or draw and color for hours. But all kids need fun activities to keep busy and if you can’t afford camp these are the next best thing.

Night movies

Night movies can be so fun to do with your kids. With a simple TV projector that can be purchased for under $100 you can use your house as a screen and project movies onto your walls and have a real theater experience for less than the cost of movies all summer. Just add popcorn, some blankets, and some candy and pop and you have your very own movie theater under the stars. Kids will have a blast and parents will get that much needed connection time with their kids making it fun for all. This can also be good for date night with your husband if you can’t afford a babysitter simply put the kids to bed slip out to the backyard and watch a romantic movie under the stars. Inviting the neighborhood friends over for movie night is also another way to utilize this affordable idea.

Swimming at the community pool

Swimming is something that kids love to do. Most kids beg to go swimming all year even in winter so when summer comes why not take them swimming as much as possible. The community or neighborhood pool is an affordable way to do this without having to dig up your back yard and installing your own pool. But if you happen to have your own pool teaching them the rules and maintenance of the pool is a must. Swimming is great exercise and as long as you use the proper sun screen you will be protected from the UV rays and be able to have a most enjoyable summer.

Hide and seek in the dark

This is something that kids would love to do. It involves exploration with night time fun. You will need a flashlight to keep up with the kids and finding the ultimate flashlight can be pretty easy with research. Hide and seek is an all-time favorite of kids for generations but adding in after dark can make it even more fun. So turn out all the lights in the house and play or for more fun take it to the yard and give boundaries on where they can and can’t hide. If you stay in a safe neighborhood or cul-de-sac you can also involve the neighbor’s parents and kids and have a neighborhood wide hide and seek game. These are so fun and kids really have a blast doing it. Just think of the memories you will be forming with your children that they can share with their future children.

Entertaining your kids during summer time can be both creative and fun. Just imagine your favorite activities you did as a kid and add some creativity to them and let their imagination go wild. Summer is for letting loose and enjoying time away from studies and school. Have slumber parties, jump in bounce houses, play in the water, do things you have always wanted to do with your kids and just remember they are only young once so enjoy it while you can.

How do Personality Quizzes and TV Help You Understand Your Child?

kids educational television

Anyone who has interacted with or has more than one child has realized that there are many differences in what each child likes and dislikes, regardless of their ages. Not all girls over the age of five love Barbies just like not all boys are going to be interested in Star Wars. The differences in each interest stem from the different types of personalities that a child has. By better understanding the personalities of your children you will be able to help them grow and teach them in a way that is nurturing their lives and less frustrating for you as a parent.

Why is a Child’s Personality Important?

kids educational televisionThink about the way that you deal with a particular situation. Let’s say, the way your employer talks to you. Do you feel worse about yourself because of his demeaning tone or do you simply go with the punches and not let it bother you? The way you process information changes the way you feel on a day to day basis. The same is true of children. This is why not every punishment or learning method works with each child. When you understand a child’s personality, you are better able to get your information across to them because you are using an approach that they accept.

Personality Quizzes

There are plenty of cool personality quizzes online. When perusing our favorite social media sites we find ourselves participating in them all the time. All of those 10-question quizzes that talk about what kind of flower are you or what state you belong in are a form of personality quiz. You can use a general personality quiz to determine what type of child you have. Depending on the guideline you are using, you will find that there are 3-4 different types of personalities. Each has its own unique characteristics and each one processes information a little differently. One of the best options is the Florence Littauer and her Personality Plus books which take an easy to understand approach to different personalities. Once you understand the type of personality of your child you will be able to implement the type of language that they respond best too.

Television Shows

The types of kids educational television shows that your child chooses can also say a lot about their personality. Children who are more interested in shows with adventure and creative style learning tend to have more creative and caring personalities. Those that are drawn to shows which are more technical and ask questions to understand it tend to grow up into Type A personalities. Watch the types of shows that your child watches and how they relate to the characters. Their relationships with these fictions characters can indicate the emotions that they are not saying. For example, if you find that your child really resonates with Lilo and Stich then there may be some underlying sadness related to the death of a family member or pet or even just a feeling of abandonment when the parents are at work.

Putting it All Together

Too many parents today think there is something wrong with their child and send them to see a therapist instead of trying to understand them. It is important that parents focus on nurturing their child’s true self and not forcing their own personalities onto them. If each parent makes an effort to communicate with their child in a way that they understand then each child has a better chance of growing up with a happy and healthy life.
